A Milestone in Limb Preservation for South Carolina

Our team at Coastal Vascular & Vein Center recently performed a LimFlow procedure on a patient who was almost certain to need an above- or below-the-knee amputation. Thanks to great teamwork, we finished the procedure in less than two hours. The patient’s chance of saving the limb is now 75% or greater.

This is the first time a LimFlow procedure has been performed in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in South Carolina. Because the procedure is technically complex, it’s rarely offered in the Charleston area.

“This is a milestone not only for our practice but for the state of South Carolina,” said Sean J. Hislop, MD, RVPI, vascular surgeon and medical director. “It’s a leap forward in limb preservation for patients who have no option other than major amputation. I’d like to personally thank everyone involved in this achievement.”

What Is LimFlow?

LimFlow is a minimally invasive procedure for people with severe peripheral artery disease (PAD) who can’t have bypass surgery or stents. When the arteries in the lower leg are blocked, LimFlow reroutes blood through nearby veins so it can reach the foot again. The FDA approved it in 2023.
