When Leg Pain and Slow-Healing Wounds Are More Than "Just Aging"
Your legs cramp a few blocks into your walk, and lately a small sore on your foot just won’t heal. It’s tempting to write these things off as a normal part of getting older, but your body may be telling you something important. At Coastal Vascular & Vein Center, we help patients get to the root of circulation problems every day. Here’s what these symptoms could mean, and why catching them early matters.
What Is Peripheral Artery Disease?
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) happens when the arteries that carry blood to your legs and feet narrow due to plaque buildup. With less blood flow, your muscles and skin don’t get the oxygen they need to work or heal the way they should. PAD is serious, but it’s also very treatable, especially when it’s found early.
Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
Leg pain when walking. Cramping or aching in your calves, thighs, or hips that starts when you walk and fades when you rest is called claudication (leg pain caused by poor blood flow). It’s one of the most common early signs of PAD.
Numbness, tingling, or cold feet. Reduced circulation can leave your legs or feet feeling numb, weak, or noticeably colder than the rest of your body.
Slow-healing wounds. A sore on your foot, ankle, or leg that lingers for weeks isn’t just a skin problem. It’s often a circulation problem. Here’s the key: treating the wound alone isn’t enough. If poor blood flow is the root cause, the wound will struggle to heal until circulation is restored.
What You Can Do
- Take our free 2-minute PAD symptom quiz. It’s a quick, simple way to find out if your symptoms point to a circulation issue.
- Get a vascular evaluation. Painless, non-invasive testing can confirm whether PAD is present and how advanced it is.
- Treat the root cause. Our team restores blood flow with proven, often minimally invasive treatments.
- Heal with support. We now have an in-house RN focused on wound care at our Nexton location in Summerville, so your wound gets expert attention while we treat the circulation behind it.
You Don’t Have to Live With Leg Pain
These symptoms aren’t something you just have to accept with age. Left untreated, PAD can lead to serious complications, but treated early, most patients get back to walking comfortably. Take our free 2-minute PAD symptom quiz or call Vascular & Vein Center at 843-577-4551 to schedule an evaluation. Better circulation means a more active, independent life, and it starts with one small step.
