Varicose Veins & Spider Veins
Varicose Veins and Spider Veins are the result of a condition called Venus Reflux. Venus Reflux is a condition whereby blood that would normally flow back towards the heart flows the “wrong way” back away from the heart due to damaged valves located inside the veins. These valves, especially in the legs, allow blood to flow “uphill” or against gravity. When these valves are damaged or malfunctioning, blood will pool and accumulate in the surrounding veins, causing these smaller veins to swell. Veins that are close to the surface of the skin will bulge and become visible to the naked eye. Larger, bulging veins are knows as varicose veins. Smaller, bulging veins are known as spider veins.
